FedEx, UK hospitals, and other businesses were hit by a massive ransomware attack this weekend. Nearly 75,000 computers in 100 countries were affected by malware called WannaCry, which encrypts and locks a computer and demands a $300 ransom to unlock the computer.
Many of the computers attacked this weekend were breached because the latest Windows updates have not been updated.
How to defend your computers against ransomware
- Exposure does not exist for users using Windows 10, but is existent in all versions of Windows prior to Windows 10, all the way back to Windows XP.
- Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.1 users can easily protect themselves against ransomware by running Windows Update on their systems.
- Windows XP, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2003 users can protect themselves by downloading the patch from Windows.
Microsoft is currently working with customers to provide additional assistance as this situation evolves.
